Dear Families,

It is lovely to be back at school and thank you all for making it so welcoming on my return. Mrs Thorne will still be in school as I transition to more days to ensure consistency.

It has been a very good first week of term with the children working hard in class and following those Lingwood values of kindness, ambition and determination. Next week we have the mini-marathon and Year 6 residential visit to Hautbois to look forward to.

Year group news

Nursery

This week, Nursery have been reading the book Elephant in my Kitchen! They have enjoyed spotting all the silly things that the animals in the book have been doing. In Foundational Knowledge, we have been learning about a variety of different wild animals including penguins, orangutans and pandas and finding out where they live and looking at their different habitats. In maths we have been matching, comparing and sorting objects. We have used fruit, wild animals and blocks to practise our sorting and matching skills.

Reception Rabbits

What an exciting first week back Rabbits have had!  We have enjoyed learning about grouping and sharing in maths, as well as our story ‘Martha Maps It Out’ which has inspired us to create our own maps for areas that we know.  Most excitingly though, we have had lots of new visitors – our butterflies!  It has been wonderful to watch their lifecycle and relate it back to our learning, and we especially enjoyed naming and releasing them.  Keep an eye out for Ronaldo and his friends in your garden!

Hares

This week Hares class have started a new topic in music, learning more about changes in tempo and dynamics in songs. They also carried on some of the excellent learning from before the Easter break in computing, where children demonstrated how much they had remembered to code short sequences in Scratch Jr. In science we are starting a new topic on plants – this week we have begun by writing our own scientific questions!

Fawns

This week Fawns have started to explore a new text in reading. We are learning about the lifecycle of frogs with the story of TAD. In writing we have been thinking about where authors get their ideas from and have written some short stories based on the nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. In maths we have started our new unit on statistics. Well done for all of your hard work this week.

Otters

This week Otter class have continued with their core text of The Boy at the Back of the Class. In writing they have been exploring diary entries – writing about something unexpected which happened to them. In science, they have enjoyed learning about food chains delving into the key vocabulary of predators, prey and producers. In art, they created their own optical illusions using the method of layering an image on top of coloured paper repeatedly.

Badgers

Badgers have kicked off the half term with a new writing unit all about Greek myths. They have been so excited to read about Theseus and the Minotaur and they will begin to write their own myth next week. In PE, they did a great job improving their running skills in athletics, and in computing they learned the importance of creating safe and secure passwords! Well done Badgers for a great week.

Foxes

Fox class have had a great first week back. They started ratio in mathematics and autobiographies in English. In DT, the class started a new unit based on structures – they will be testing strength and designing their own structures over the next few weeks. In science, the class also began a new unit on classifying animals, initially looking at the work of Carl Linnaeus.
