Dear Families,

What a lovely week in school it has been – the children have been hard at work and I have seen some amazing learning and following the Lingwood values of kindness, ambition and determination. Well done to those children who have received a gold badge for 200 Dojo points.

Next week is a bank holiday Monday so please remember that the school is closed on Monday 4th May.

Year group news

Nursery

This week in Nursery we have been reading ‘Errol’s Garden’. We have enjoyed sharing ideas about what we would like in our ‘dream garden’ and learning what plants need to grow. We have started planting our own sunflower seeds and making sure they have all the things they need. In maths we have been recognising 1, 2 and 3 and counting out the right amount.

Reception Rabbits

This week Rabbits have been learning about how to protect the environment and what people like David Attenborough and Isatou Ceesay have done to help. In our maths, we have been measuring and comparing length, weight and volume. It has been lovely to spend more time outside and explore our learning more there too.

Hares

This week Hares class have enjoyed designing their own toast houses in DT, talking about why toast could be used for building a structure while non-toasted bread could not. In English they have done really well with their instructional writing, learning how to use imperative verbs to outline steps for making a fruit smoothie. In maths we have started a new topic on fractions, building up to learning how to recognise and make a half.

Fawns

This week in Fawns we have enjoyed thinking about what seeds need to grow. We learn the word dormant and linked it to our knowledge of seeds. In writing we have started retelling a story and I have been really impressed by the pupils focus and independence.

Otters

This week in Otter class we continue with the topic of time – looking specifically at analogue and digital. In reading, we have started our new text The Wind in the Willows. The children are learning how to write a third person narrative using descriptive devices. They built a working circuit in science and created a 3D sculpture which they covered in tissue paper during art!

Badgers

Badgers have been hard at work this week with their English and maths! They are midway through their Greek myths and using a variety of techniques taught to upskill their writing. In maths, they have continued their work on decimals, including recognising the place value of decimals and multiplying and ordering decimals. In science, they have started their new unit on Living Things and their Habitats and kickstarted the unit with learning about dichotomous keys and used it to classify different trees! In DT, they have started their new unit all about designing and making road safety belts! Well done Badgers!

Foxes

The Year 6 pupils have come back well-rested form Hautbois and the whole class have been working well. In English, they have started writing their autobiographies based on a person from the Windrush generation. In maths, the class have been studying algebra – next is shapes and measure. Finally, in DT, the class made towers of spaghetti to test strength and support.
