Dear Families,

Welcome back to school and I hope that you have had a lovely Christmas break. Thank you for being so welcoming and I am looking forward to getting to know the school and community better.

One area that I will focus on is to ensure that all pupils are following the Lingwood values of kindness, ambition and determination both in the classroom and at break and lunchtimes. I have seen lots of positive behaviour from the children so far and the school will continue to work on this in the future. Congratulations to the nine children who received their silver badge today – next step is gold!

Year group news

Nursery

It’s been lovely to see all the children again after the Christmas break and hear all their news. This week we have been reading People Need People and talking about the people who are important to us. We have also been thinking about what to do if we feel sad or alone and who can help us. In maths we have been counting out objects up to 3 and making potions to help with this. We have also been learning to sequence events using words like now, next and after.

Reception Rabbits

What a wonderful start to 2026 for Rabbit Class! We have started our new story, ‘The Invisible’ and are using this to learn about the different types of homes people live in and how to help each other.  It has been great to welcome new people to our class, including Ms Freezer who has really enjoyed her first two days and is looking forward to the rest of the term.

Hares

We’ve had a great start to the new year in Hares class! In English we have been enjoying the nonsense poem ‘The Quangle Wangle’s Hat’, working together to summarise the poem and understand some of the archaic language it uses. In maths we have started a new block of learning which focuses on addition and subtraction within 100, while in science we have been investigating the properties of everyday materials as we test the strength of different types of paper. The class have also been very welcoming to Mr Scott, who is now teaching Hares class on Thursdays and Fridays.

Fawns

What a lovely first week back from the holidays. This week we have started our new unit in reading and begun to explore the book: The Pebble in my pocket. In writing we have been looking at sentence structure and performing poetry. We have continued our multiplication and division unit in maths and thinking about which strategies are the most appropriate to use for different types of problems.

Otters

Otters have been working extremely hard this week starting their new unit on news reports. They have explored first and third person perspective. In maths, they continue with the unit of multiplication, looking at how they can multiply using a variety of methods. In D.T. they started to create their hinges ready to add to their final project of a box.

Badgers

Badgers have been hard at work this week, continuing their maths work on coordinates. In English, they have started a new unit on biographies, where they have been focusing on chronology and conjunctions. In science, they have started their new unit on forces and carried out a particularly ‘wobbly’ experiment with jelly cubes to find out how they are affected by friction! Well done for a super week Badgers!

Foxes

Welcome back! Fox class have worked well this week, starting a new unit in maths on decimals and in English they are writing a third person narrative. In science, the class proved that light travels in a straight line and in art they persevered at drawing a one-point perspective picture.
