Dear Families,

The theme for this week was independence. Being able to think and behave in the correct manner independently is a very important life skill; well done to those who received their award this week. I have seen some very good independent work around the school: number bonds to 10 in Rabbits, making Kente cloth in Otters and writing a fantasy narrative in Foxes to name a few things.

Chess club on a Friday lunch time is up and running. We have 16 chess and draught sets kindly donated by FOLPA to use. If you know how to play chess (or draughts) then come along on Friday lunch and play.

Heather Thorne

Interim headteacher

Year group news

Nursery

This week in Nursery we have been reading Wow! Said the Owl. We have been talking about all the colours that the owl saw and learning to sing the ‘Rainbow Song’. We have also been learning about different types of weather, looking at the clothes we might need to wear and what they might be made from. In maths we have been counting up to five using songs and stories to help us.

Reception Rabbits

Rabbits have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We shared the beautiful book ‘My Butterfly Bouquet’ and looked at the body parts of a butterfly. We have also focused on the words ‘poisonous, nectar, bouquet, hatch, blooming, chrysalis and bouquet’. In maths we have focused on the numbers 9 and 10, looking at the number bonds that add together to make these numbers.

Hares

Hares have had a fantastic week and have impressed Ms Freezer with the start of their stories.  We are looking forward to continuing this next week. In maths we have finished learning about multiplying and dividing by 2, 5 and 10 and have now started to learn how to measure accurately with rulers.

Fawns

This week in Fawns we have been working hard to write our first-person recounts using a range of adjectives and expanded noun phrases. In maths we have been learning about how to measure length and mass. We also had an exciting science workshop learning about different pets and their habitats.

Otters

Otters have been wonderfully creative this week! They have made Kente cloth with geometric paintings in art! Each colour represents a theme and each child chose the colours they wanted to represent themselves. In writing, they have started their new topic of persuasive writing: adverts. They have been exploring slogans and superlatives so far. In maths, they continue with the unit on measurement looking at kilograms and grams.

Badgers

Badgers have been so busy this week with their learning. They have started a new topic in English, exploring what a synopsis is. This will eventually build up to them writing their own synopsis of one of our core texts: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In maths, they have carried on with subtracting fractions and mixed numbers and they have shown great perseverance with this. This week, they demonstrated fantastic skills in cricket by practising their bowling skills, and in science they have continued exploring space (and more specifically, the lunar cycle).

Foxes

This week, Foxes have been finishing off their fantasy narratives and will be editing it over the next few lessons. In mathematics, the class have finished their learning on area, perimeter and volume.  In art, the class sketched koi carp and used watercolours to create the effect of movement under water. In history, the class learned more about the Windrush generation, specifically their involvement during WW2.
